On the west door of Durham Cathedral is its famous Sanctuary knocker from which the Conference takes its theme of Sanctuary. Any fugitive grasping this was assured peace and security for a time; however, you don’t need to be a fugitive to find sanctuary at Durham in July 2008 – come and discover for yourself the beauty of the north-east and experience its hospitality.

Accommodation at St. Chad’s College, Durham City

Very centrally situated in the old part of the city, directly opposite the East end of the Cathedral and minutes away from shops, museums and peaceful riverside walks, St. Chad’s offers accommodation in single & twin rooms, some, but not all, of which are en-suite. The college is spread over large Georgian terraced houses, and bedrooms are in small corridors with ample bath/shower rooms and toilets. There are some ground-floor rooms. All rooms have wash hand basins and tea/coffee making facilities.

If you wish to extend your stay at the College , please state this when you apply. Bed and breakfast will be £32 per person. Members of the North East England Branch will be on hand in the afternoon of Tuesday 29th July to welcome early arrivals.

Parking : Situated as it is, there is no parking around the college itself but there are designated parking places, away from the college – some system of shuttle-transport will be laid on for arrival and departure days. Cars are not necessary in Durham itself, as the city centre is pedestrianised and very compact, though hilly. A bus runs throughout the working day from the Cathedral to and from the market place.

Travel to Durham

Durham has its own railway station on the main east coast line, with direct links to London and other major cities. There is a rail link with Manchester International Airport ; Newcastle & Durham Tees Valley International Airports are very accessible.

By road, it is only 2 miles from the A1(M) . There are direct bus links from major cities.

Further travel details will be sent out as you book.

Insurance: it is advisable to take out travel insurance that includes cancellation cover, should you need to cancel.
